Cowboy Cook Out

The club will have a Cowboy Cook Out on Sunday, August 9th.  The fire will be ready to for you to cook your steak, chicken, pork or your choice of meat at 1:00 pm.  We will meet at the usual place off of Shaw Mesa.  Remember to bring your chair, a side dish to share and come enjoy more good food and fellowship.  Hope to see you there.

full moon outing 7-30-15

What a grand night for a cookout, no wind, no rain, what else could one ask for?  How about some brownies, I can't recall another outing that there wasn't at least one batch of brownies ............but seriously it was a great outing with lots of food, fun and fellowship.
This may be the largest group we have had, certainly the loudest anyway, the brats & dogs were roasted to perfection by Kevin, Terry & Jim, the ladies set up the serving line and food was devoured by all present.
The s'mores were a hit with old and young alike, thanks Kevin & Paula.

A large group, including some "non-hikers", made it out to the overlook and back without any loss of life or dignity. The distance to the overlook varies with the time, temperature and whatever else may be thought of at the time..........

Poage lake hike

We found some chanterelles, some very fresh and some older ones, but not one Bolete was to be found.  Perhaps we are still a little early for them.  The cattle have really spent a lot of "loafing" time in this area, should be lots of mushrooms next year if they like fertilizer.............
The wildflowers are at their peak at this elevation (10,900 ft.) but it looks drier up there than down lower around Big Meadows area..

Come Monday for a very interesting hike, Wayne is taking us up the Hope Cr. trail, we will need to be cautious in the burned area.

Model T Park and Kilimanjaro

Today, the hike weather looks good, based on the forecast on Channel 2.  Cloudy until 9, then clearing off.  We'll head up towards Model T Park with its lovely views and wild irises and maybe a few elk.
Should Channel 2 be erroneous in its weather forecast, we have two interesting bail-outs that will bring us down the hill on short-cuts.

I just got a few pictures of Mt. Kilimanjaro from Stacy Stanley.  Stacy, from the Gulf Coast, and her daughter were here several weeks ago for some conditioning.  I had the privilege of helping them a little  (i.e. hillsides with steepness and making it up Baldy Cinco at moderate speed). She reported that Africa's highest peak was no piece of cake, but she made it .
(Stacy's mother lives in the South Fork area.)

Alder Bench hike

Wayne led 23 of us up the Alder Bench trail, which is a little steep in places and has 5 or 6 switchbacks on it to get to the top of the hill.  Everybody made it up 2.5 miles to a nice spot for our lunch and a chance to enjoy the scenery.
Most of the wildflowers are finished blooming at this elevation (9250 ft.) but there were still a few doing their thing.......

DUE TO THE CONFLICTS OF HIKING ON FRIDAY WITH OTHER ST EVENTS, FOREST SERVICE TRAINING CLASSES AND MY SCHEDULED COMMITMENTS, WE WILL GO BACK TO HIKING ON THURSDAYS, EFFECTIVE THIS THURSDAY.

WE ALSO WILL HAVE OUR MOONLIGHT OUTING THIS THURSDAY NIGHT ON SHAW MESA.  WE WILL START THE CAMPFIRE AT ABOUT 630PM AND PLAN ON EATING AT ABOUT 730PM.

MARY & I WILL BRING THE BRATS, DOGS, BUNS, DRINKS AND TABLE SERVICE.  PLEASE BRING A DISH TO COMPLEMENT THE DOGS & BRATS TO SHARE WITH EVERYONE.

Thanks, Dennis

Wed. (7/22) Hike

The hike on Wednesday will meet at the Visitor Center (departure at 9 a.m.)

If the weather allows, I'd like to walk up the three miles to the top of Del Norte Peak. Some will go to the top, arriving by noon. Others will enjoy the lovely views from the high saddle, without the last 400-ft. steep climb.

I took about 20 Woodland Texas hikers there last month. They loved it and talked about it with pride--some of them older than most of you South Fork kids.

If the weather should appear threatening, we'll discuss a lower and closer destination.

One of two hikes today

Wednesday, your guide goofed.  Five people went on the wide path off of the road to Pogue Lake.  The other two cars weren't as close as we thought—not enough to see our turn onto that trail, so continued to Pogue Lake and enjoyed the stroll, led by Ozzie (thank you!).  I apologize for the unacceptable (for me) slip-up.  I appreciate your good spirits.

We saw tracks of elk large and small--the babies are out learning the trails. --Doug Knudson
