Shrader hike 5-18-15

Wayne led us up the Shrader road (FSR333, which isn't on the map) for about 2.5 miles through some pretty scenery until we found a nice lunch spot.  We got sprinkled on a few times, just enough to cool us off, it being a warm and beautiful day.

We jumped 3 bunches of deer on the way out, one buck looked like a 3X3 and a spike, all the rest were does.

From the golf course to the sculptured rock-May 11 hike

On Monday morning, after all the Sunday snow, 9 hikers walked along Alder Creek.  We took due note of the alder bushes/trees, the big twisted Douglas-fir, and the meanders of the creek.

Next hike:  Next Monday with Linda and Wayne Moulds at 9 a.m. at the South Fork Visitor Center.

Alder Creek does wander here and there.

The ultimate "easy" hike.

The "Kern Thumb" depicted by Stuart Bryan in his "Fremont's Fourth ..." book, p 105. This is about 1/4 mile above the
Forest Service Guard Station--a special place close to home and seldom visited.  No vandalism, please!

This formation is above the confluence of West, East, and Middle Alder Creeks.  Fremont took the gentle-looking but

suddenly narrow canyon up to near the location of Hansen's Mill.

Hike from Rickels park

Doug led us up the hill from Rickels park in SF, then along the ridge SW to the Church creek drainage, across Church creek twice and then to his vehicle located in the Beaver Mtn. estates.
Good, vigorous hike with lots of scenery all around and we had sleet for about 5 minutes and a couple of light showers before we got back to the truck.

Remember, 9AM at the Visitor Center...............on Mondays.

Welcome to May 4 Hike

We started at 9, right here in town, climbed up to the ridge, and along the rising ridge. We ate at the edge of the '02 fire. Then we descended to Church Creek, crossed it twice, and strode enthusiastically to the red transportation.  Thanks for the enthusiasm and common sense.  It seems that 7 of the 8 had never been on this deer/elk trail route.  Welcome back to Bonnie.

We saw tiny flowers starting the spring. This big hill is the home of 3 species of pines, douglas-fir, a few scattered blue spruces and aspen. We saw and followed many deer trails and startled one big elk.  We missed the 3 p.m. rainfall.

Next Monday—9 a.m.  We're planning a beautiful, pleasant trail walk (just for contrast).
The Moulds will be back with us;  The last two Mondays of May, Judy and I will be at our granddaughter's U of Md. graduation events (whew!). —Doug Knudson
