Kids Hike 7-30-14

Wow!! We had 11 kids today for climbing on the boulders South of Million Res., also had enough adults along to keep track of all of them.  Amazing how helpful the kids are toward one another to climb the rocks, carry each others packs and share their snacks.

It was pretty wet after yesterdays rain so we had to be extra careful doing the climbing, only had one injury requiring any first aid, Jada skinned her shin up.  A few minutes after bandaging she was back in the thick of everything................

I really enjoyed the outing, I hope everyone else did as well.

See you next week

Tuesday Ride to Platoro

Twenty of us rode to Platoro and had lunch, and it was good. It was a perfect day for a 70 mile ride. Pictures on top of Blow Out Pass and Platoro. The sheep are at Summitville. The flowers our close to Gray Back Mountain.

Middle Frisco Cr. hike 7-21-14

Wayne led 25 hikers up the Middle Frisco Cr. trail, a trail that is great for scenery and plant life.  Barbara saw some Boletes mushrooms and I found a new (to me) variety of mushroom; an Apricot Jelly mushroom.  My reference book classifies it as edible raw or cooked.  It didn't taste like apricot so it must derive its name from its color, similar to apricots.

We got sprinkled on about a mile from the vehicles, just enough to get out the raingear.

The Thursday hike will be a mushrooming hike, will go up the Alder Cr. drainage and look for the earlier varieties ( boletes, puffballs & hawkwings), so bring a sack.

"Tuesday hikes"

Rio Grande from Coller Wildlife Management Area

Hello, Hikers--

I'm sorry to say that my heel is still telling me not to go on long hikes.  It's getting better, but slowly.  So for the next week or so, I'll not be able to accompany the few who have shared these hikes with me.  Dennis had offered to participate on this Tuesday but his wife reminded him of a family event that will take them out of town.

I'd like to invite you to another event on Thursday the 24th of July.  The Visitor Center in South Fork has scheduled me to offer a discussion of the Old Spanish National Historic Trail. Its an important asset to the economies and culture of this area.  I'll have some free handouts as well as my book (for sale), along with a chance for you to ask questions, make plans, etc.  I believe this is scheduled for 10-11 a.m. on the 24th (you might verify on the schedule at the Visitor Center, which isn't open today).  We'll be either under the shelter or in the Center itself, depending on weather.
I'll be available to discuss the same topic on August 21, 10-11 a.m, same place.

Friday Work Day and Wednesday

Four of us worked on Burro Creek Trail today. We hauled rocks and filled up holes and cut some trees. Harolena and I worked on Cross Creek Trail on Wednesday.
