Del Norte Peak Hike

Del Norte Peak welcomed 8 hikers from South Fork on June 28, 2010. Granddaughter Madelyn Treibly from Midlothian, TX, trudged to the top (12,400') with no apparent difficulty except "when do we eat lunch?"  A dozen cows and calves wandered around on snow and sod about 300 yards down from the top. Threatening clouds produced no rain or lightning, allowing us to photograph the alpine wildflower show--it ought to be good for another 2-3 weeks. Don't miss it! This is always one of the easiest ways to get on the alpine tundra, surrounded by a dozen or more colorful species of flowers. Marty's magic measuring device revealed that the round trip was only 5.75 miles, a deduction from our 6-mile announced estimate.

Next week, on Monday at 9 a.m., we plan to depart the Visitor Center parking lot for a few miles of NW travel (out and back) on the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail, starting at Lobo Overlook. Bring lunch, a camera, boots, binoculars, and rain gear. If the overdue rains start by then, we may have to adjust our destination.
