Miners Creek hike

Creede and down the valley sent 24 up Miners Creek. Some were on their last Colorado hike in 2010. Thanks for your participation and your endurance this summer.

The valley of this little stream showed off new colors of adornment for 2010--glorious gold, vibrant yellow, opulent orange, lime green. Even a scattering of little red leaves and fruits enriched the tapestry covering the sides of mountains arising from the bottom of the canyon to the stony timberline.

This Rio Grande National Forest offers so much beauty in its four seasons, so much opportunity to challenge our vigor and to increase our stamina, perception, and fitness.

We'll keep on hiking on Tuesdays. We'll work our way down in elevation as the snow takes over. We have some special things planned for late October. We'll switch to Mondays when the ski season starts (early November). Then we'll try weekly snowshoe or XC ski treks through the deep snows.

We'll meet at the South Fork Visitor Center, usually at 9, sometimes at 8 or 10. Please remember that we do not operate as an organization or commercial enterprise. Each person takes personal responsibility for him/herself.

We welcome newcomers. New people come with us a couple of times each month.

We ask that you come prepared for conditions (proper boots, clothing, water, conditioning). We request that pets be left elsewhere. We usually have self-provided lunches while on the hikes. We seek to experience camaraderie, collaborative behavior, and new areas among the hundreds here.

Our hikers include fit folks in their 70s and 80s, as well as many younger folks who try to keep up or slow down. We try to adapt to each other. Once in a while, those who seek more challenging activity manage to extend or speed up the trip without inconveniencing the others. Some of us can climb a mountain, hike many miles, or make a new ski/snowshoe trail by making arrangements with us.

We've had several suggestions for next Tuesday, hopefully high in altitude, but not too far away from South Fork. Let's plan on meeting at 9 a.m. at the Visitor Center.

We extend our wishes for safe travel to those who are headed into less refreshing climates in the next few weeks. We've enjoyed having you with us.
