Bear Cr./Alder Cr. hike

We hiked from the Bear Cr. canyon to the Alder Cr. canyon by going over the top behind Alcove Spring, looking for shed antlers. We found 3 Deer and 1 Elk, all from last year. Bob was very glad to find his after tramping many miles looking for some antlers.

Next hike will be Monday and will be a cleanup hike on the Lake Fork trail, bring gloves, pruners and a small hand saw if you have one............and lunch, water and a friend.

Hike up the South Fork to Archuleta Creek

Seven hikers took a stimulating walk, with visiting forester Dave from Texas, up the South Fork of the Rio Grande from the Big Meadows Reservoir.  Some of our neighbors were already up near Archuleta Creek when we got there for lunch. 

 

The South Fork waters put on a great show--clear, fast running, frothing over rocks and small waterfalls, and looking just great.  The floral display has begun.  Red columbines were blooming by the hundreds, along with numerous others--pink Fremont geranium, white mountain candytuft and brook cress, strawberry blooms, and scrambled.  Bob and George sat down with what I called mullein in the meadow above Big Meadows Reservoir (last picture). 

 

Next Tuesday, Barbara Thiesfeld is making arrangements for an interesting hike.  Meet her at the Visitor Center parking lot in South Fork, unless she informs you differently.  Judy and I'll be in California for two Tuesdays, for a second big graduation for our family.

 

Keep getting fit.  We have some great high altitude hikes coming up in July and August.

Archuleta Trail Hike

We hiked 6 miles round trip up the trail until we came to the 1st water crossing. There we decided to have lunch and enjoy the scenery around us.

Farmer Creek Hike

This hike is near Creede past the Wason Ranch. We hiked 5 miles  round trip.The hike is done in the springtime since there is not much shade. After lunch the clouds came in and it was a nice hike back to the cars. There was a fair amount of uphill and areas that reminded us of the TV show The Big Valley! We had several new hikers and we hope they will join our group again.

Alcove Springs hike

With all of the other activities going on in South Fork, the Thursday hike turned into the Shepherd Family Outing. We hiked above Alcove Springs, looking for shed antlers, but we didn't find any. But it was a good time for all of us, especially Erik heading back down to the truck.

The FULL MOON IS NEXT MONDAY, WE WILL PLAN ON HAVING OUR FIRST MOONLIGHT HIKE ON SHAW MESA. Come up about 6:30PM and we will have a campfire with hot dogs, chili dogs, hot drinks and condiments. Please bring a dish to complement a cookout and bring a camp chair. Mary & I will furnish the dogs, drinks and condiments as usual. Come on out and enjoy the experience of walking in the moonlight...............
