9 Monday morning hikers followed Wayne up the Alder Bench Trail for 2.5 miles, partook of nourishment, and returned with little or no trouble or deep breathing on the way down. The weather got rather warm--summer is on the way.
Tomorrow (Tuesday) at 9 we'll have a close to home hike/drive to find the sleeping places of the 1848 trek of the Fremont party as they approached the Rio Grande via Embargo Creek. This involves some surprising caves. The trip should last no longer than noon. We'll cross the Creek once (and back) to see the caves. Total drive--10 miles. Total pedestrian miles--less than one. If you want to see some interesting local history sites of national importance, you needn't even get out of the car. If you prefer to walk where history walked, we'll be doing it.
I spent last Thursday with author Stuart Bryan in getting the places he wrote about firmly located. Unfortunately, he has headed NW to his boat on Puget Sound for the summer. I'll do my best to tell his stories.
I'll look for you at the Visitor Center by 9 a.m. Tuesday morning. --Doug Knudson
