Deep Creek Trail

Wayne led us up the Deep Creek trail, lots of cold water in the creek, luckily nobody fell in. Wayne found us a nice sunny spot for our lunch and then we headed back to the vehicles. It looks like winter is here, hope we have a few more hikes before the snow gets too deep; then it is time to put on the snowshoes.
The Thursday hike will be in the Lime Kiln area, we will visit a kiln and then head for a grave on top of a hill about 3 miles NW from the kiln. It is about 4 miles on an ATV, will be a bit shorter with taking some shortcuts. Then on the way out we will head cross-country and it will be about 3 miles back, making it about a 7 mile hike. It will all be out in open and away from the hunters for the most part.
Meet at the VCPL by 9AM and bring your lunch, water and a friend........

West San Francisco Creek

Beautiful weather, gentle trail, polite hunters, new S.F. residents made this hike pleasant. The creek almost doesn't deserve the name this time of the year.

Thursday hike available--Wayne will meet any takers at the S.F. Visitor Center before 9 a.m.
Next Monday--same time, same place, different hiking destination.

Welcome, Bonnie & Bob Munro (next to Pat in front row). Wayne,
Susan, Linda, and Mayebelle in back row.

Down the trail

Aspen, D-fir, Engelmann Spruce, and dozens of leafy plants holding
their flowers for next summer.

There's the "creek", under the log.

Lost Lake

We planned on hiking the Shady Cr. trail behind Del Norte peak (Plan A) but about 5 miles from the trailhead the snow was 8-10 inches deep so we switched to Plan B. We went into Lost Lake and then along the bluff on the North side of Shaw Mesa for a couple of miles. We went through some of the burn area that had been replanted with conifers and they looked very good, some of them were above the plastic protector around them, most of them were alive. We covered about 7 miles total...........
We will hike Monday, meet at the VCPL by 9AM, bring your friends, lunch, water and an orange vest............

East Bear cr. trail

Wayne & Linda led us up the East Bear cr. trail, most of the color has left for this season, but it is still a nice trail. We went up about 2 miles to a good lunch spot and enjoyed the food and fellowship, then ambled our way home...............
We will hike next Thursday, a little harder hike since it will be uphill coming out, but well worth the effort SO COME JOIN US AT THE VCPL BY 9 AM. BRING YOUR LUNCH, WATER, ORANGE VEST AND A FRIEND.

ATV Rides

There will be no more scheduled rides on Tuesday or Friday. We will send out an email when there will be a ride, and it will be on a non hunting day most likely. We are still planning a work day this Friday. I will send out an email when we know for sure.

E. Bear Creek Trail

East Bear Creek Trail (709) offered colorful aspens, a thin layer of snow, and a beautiful sky.

Dennis will send you some other views.

In case you didn't get the message, the Tuesday hikes gone into winter hibernation. We will continue to hike/snowshoe on Mondays and Thursdays (as long as there is interest). Thinking ahead: How about a day-after-Christmas (Dec. 26) snowshoe trip for all your guests? Will that disrupt your skiing schedule? For some of us, that's the day to stay off the slopes.

Don't forget the full moon picnic and short hike tonight. The sunset and moonrise should be splendid.

Tuesday Ride

I don’t think we will have a work day, because it will be muddy and nasty up higher. I suggest we wait till Friday. It is suppose to be clear all week.

Friday ATV Ride

There will be an ATV work day ride Friday, Oct. 7/2011. We will go up in the Pool Table area and clear and repair trails for grooming. Meet at the visitor center at 9 AM. We can use some tree trimmers, a hammer, and some help. I will have the nails for the signs and signs. If we have time we will put up some marker poles.

Railing on Lake Fork trail bridge

The "Poker Crew" ( 2Bills, 2 Wayne's & 1 Wild card make a Full House) put up the railing today and it looks great! And a lot safer to boot...
The next time you see Wayne Moulds, Wayne Odom, Bill Klein or Bill Keefe thank them for their efforts. This is the trail that the Hiking group has adopted in partnership with the Forest Service.
Thanks to all of you and to Mary for the delicious cinnamon rolls...........

Rainbow Trail

Wayne & Linda led us up the Rainbow Trail which follows up the West Fork of the San Juan River on the Pacific side of the Continental Divide. We went up about 2.5 miles to a lunch spot and then a little further before turning around and coming back to the vehicles. We met a couple of guys from Germany that were impressed by our open spaces and lots of sunshine. The aspen are a couple of weeks behind ours in the South Fork area, a few have changed but not many.
Our Thursday hike will be down the Shady Cr. trail on the East side of Del Norte peak, we will coast down the hill about 2 miles to a very scenic hill that offers a 300degree view of a massive aspen forest. We will hike through a large aspen grove on the way down. Then we will decide if we want to make a loop around to the Castle Rock trail or return on the same trail to the vehicles.
We will have a Moonlight Outing next Monday at Shaw Mesa, this time we will have a "soup & salad" meal. We will bring a pot of Santa Fe soup and if a couple others would bring chili or vegetable soup or whatever, it would be appreciated. Mary & I will go up about 530 to help Wayne & Linda with the fire, we will plan on eating about 7PM. If you want to make your soup in a crock pot I can plug them into my truck to keep it hot or Wayne will have a camp stove to keep it hot. If the rest of you folks would make a salad or dessert to complement the soup I think it will all work out.
We will meet Thursday at the VCPL at 9am, bring a lunch, water and a friend wearing an orange vest.......
