Archuleta & Big Meadows

We ventured up the Archuleta trail for 2 miles, clearing all the trees that we could with unskilled labor and a 6" saw. It took us quite a while to get to our lunch spot, we had to turn around due to the snow drifts along the creek; one misstep and a person could have slid into the creek and we wouldn't have found them until they showed up in Big Meadows reservoir. Made us aware that we didn't have the satellite phone to rely on...........

When we came back to the truck, we made a loop around Big Meadows, what an adventure!! Lots of downed trees, water everywhere and still some snow to contend with. Again, we moved the trees off the trail that we could. It is going to take a crew with hand saws a long time to clear the trails (chainsaws not permitted due to the Wilderness Area) to make the trails passable to even us hikers.

The picture labeled MOVO1056 is a short video clip of the creek, complete with audio; you may have to view it separately using Media Player. After our hike we went to Linda Treibly's house for refreshments and thanks to Bill Klein for taking our pictures today.........

We will hike next Tuesday up the Deep Cr. Trail; will meet the folks from Creede at the trailhead about 920 ish...........bring lunch, water and a friend. I'm not sure about the Thursday hike, most everyone is tied up and the weather prediction says it will be winter again....show up at the Comm. Bldg. and see what is happening.
