Fwd: This Hike is over

Did I do some wrong?  I thought I sent this but I am now told by my computer that it went into draft mode.  Why?  Well here we are, waiting by the highway.

On Monday, six hikers put on big shoes and trudged around some of the most beautiful forest and snow country in our area.  We jumped out of cars and put on big "shoes" and walked around the hilly area that, in summer, flows into Wolf Creek.  We followed snowmobile tracks all over this hilly country very near the Continental Divide.  The almost warm morning turned to gently pelting snow.

We walked up hills (and down)—young athletes out improving their physical  condition.

We rested now and then

Then climbed a little more.

and it started snowing, which signaled we were ready to turn around with a mile and a half back to the highway.

This vigorous hiker lady is taking her husband fishing in Texas.  No snow there.  Too bad!

This Hike is over--and oh! those trees are marking the Continental Divide and a few strides on the Continental Divide

National Scenic trail (3,150 miles long).

Next hike = Next Monday:  Snow or shine and hopefully more snow nearer home.  10 a.m. departure at the Visitor Center

By the way, thanks to several of you for communing with us at the tuesday pot luck dinner:  First Tuesday of the month, 

in the community building, at 6 p.m.  Mark that on your calendar for March.  No charge--just a plate of cookies or something

healthier.  This event is open for all residents and any temporary visitors.

Fwd: Snowmobile Ride 1-30-16

Snowmobile Ride 1-30-16:  Many snowmobile riders today at Park Creek, but we managed to find a parking spot.  5 of us took off to Elwood.  Elwood had strong winds blowing up the snow into your face. We had lunch in the little ​cabin at Elwood, and then headed to Fox.  Weather at Fox was ideal, and no one was there.  We ran into Curt Miller and his friend at Fox.  Thanks for grooming the trails, Curt.  It turned out to be a beautiful day!

New Year's Eve Snowmobile Ride

Happy New Year's Eve! Thank you, Curt Miller, for the freshly groomed trails to Fox.  The snow at Fox was pristine, 

and the Pattersons had Fox all to themselves.  They later met up with Monte and Belinda who ran late due 

a to a flat tire on their trailer.  Happy 2016 to all!

Breathtaking Hike on Monday Feb 23 (Iwo Jima day)

We knew it was snowy when we got into the V.C. parking lot and the Chief of Police was hand-shoveling the walkways and one of the patrol cars was nearly buried in that white stuff.
We saw no other likely prospects for the venture. We missed one phone call from a prospect (sorry!).

Dennis and I proceeded to Linda Treibly's house. She had her shovel going and her car parked on the street. The three of us donned snowshoes and walked a 50-minute loop along Alder Creek, then up along golf course trails that we couldn't really see, then back to Linda's.

That was less than an hour of walking on and through knee-high fluffy stuff. For some reason we didn't take another loop in a southerly direction.

Now that we three are partially conditioned, two are headed out of town. I'll be here next Monday for what could be our deepest snow-shoe hike of the year. See more of you at 10 a.m.
at the Visitor Center.

Snowmobile Trail Grooming

I need to find someone that is here during the winter and would like to volunteer to groom snowmobile trails. The club has a snow cat and drag we use. I will train anyone interested in doing this. Just let me know if you are interested and we can talk about it more.

East Alder Creek Hike

What a great day--early March, up E. Alder Creek's road/trail produced sunny views of pines, D-fir, and aspen with plenty of shrubs beginning to look like Spring.  The ground was damp. The "Thumb" was tall and showed off its many neighbors for those who looked closely.  Del Norte Peak and Beaver Mountain rose up on the South side of the Rio Grande Valley.  This 4-mile walk seemed just right for all, so Wayne suggested a 5-miler to help us grow.

Welcome to Dwayne Rue, whose storehouse of  knowledge of this forest will enrich our future hikes.

 

Next Monday, we'll try either snowshoes or boot hike.  Meet before 10 a.m. at the South Fork Visitor Center. Next Tuesday (not tomorrow), join us for the Silverthread Club supper and meeting at 6:30 p.m. in the Community Center

Snow cave construction.....

It had been about 7 years since we had demonstrated how to build a snow cave, so today we did just that!  Tim, Bob & David proved to be great snow cavers.  We were making pretty slow progress at first working like moles or gophers, but then Bob promoted all of us to "Snow Excavation Engineers" and then we really made good progress........

 

We did show that you can do this without any other equipment than what you would normally have on an outing; however,  a small packable shovel would be a real asset to carry with you all the time.
