Yurt-Alberta Lake hike 8-11-14

Wayne led 24 of us up an old logging road for a mile to the Pass Creek yurt, then another mile to an overlook (some ate lunch here) and then another half mile to Alberta Lake following the Back Country Skiers marked trail.  About 1/4 mile past the overlook we spooked a bear, light brown with darker markings.  There is scads of bear sign in the area, it must be very busy finding food for its' long winters sleep........

We had lunch at the lake and headed back up the hill and to the yurt.  At the yurt we started getting sprinkled on and some small hail, just enough to get the raingear out and put it on.

This was a nice enjoyable hike, not too hard but with lots of scenery and strawberries all over the place!  On the road back we spotted a fawn that still had its spots and a family of grouse.

Doug is leading a hike tomorrow around Elwood pass and I am leading a hike Thursday to Fox mtn (and look for mushrooms too) making a loop.

Tuesday hike

Hi, all hikers

If you're not worn out, come along tomorrow morning 9 a.m. at the Visitor Center in South Fork.

My feet have almost healed up. I got to hike several miles in New Mexico with two lively kids and their Mom (a niece of mine) on Saturday, part way up Wheeler Peak.

What I hope to do on Tuesday is travel some part of the Continental Divide Trail up at Elwood Pass. That's one of our favorites, when the weather doesn't include lightning.

If no one shows up, I'll understand and go up on my own for as long as I can take it (maybe 3-5 miles).

Moonlight outing 8-10-14

The sunset was great, the brats & s'mores were fantastic and the weather cooperated until 830PM.  The wind swung around to the NE and brought some heavy cloud cover with it, but the moon managed to peek through about 9PM.

Thanks to everybody for helping out and making it an enjoyable evening............

Mushroom hike 8-6-14

This time we found them!  Mushrooms, that is.  Dozens of chanterelles and several King Boletes, Ozzie found a giant KB but it was past its prime and couldn't be saved.  I think everybody found some, but we lost contact with a few of the hunters and haven't talked to them about the hunt.  Everybody made it back to the vehicles and the visitor center.  We never found even one hawk wing!  Dave Luning allowed as how it may be a tad early yet for them, will try again in a few days.

The hike next Thursday will be another hunt in the Fox mtn area, I plan on going in on an old road like we did 15-20 years ago and come out the new way we have been using.....

NEXT SUNDAY IS THE FULL MOON AND WE WILL HAVE OUR HIKE/COOKOUT THAT NIGHT.  MARY AND I WILL BRING THE BRATS, BUNS, CONDIMENTS, DRINKS  AND PAPER PRODUCTS.  PLEASE BRING A DISH YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHARE WITH THE GROUP.

THE MOON WILL COME UP LATER DUE TO IT BEING THE ACTUAL FULL MOON, SO LETS PLAN ON GOING UP ABOUT 7PM.  BRING A CHAIR AND A FLASHLIGHT.

OUR CAMPFIRE WILL BE ON SHAW MESA; GO ONE MIME EAST OF S.F. TO FSR 345 AND STAY ON IT FOR ABOUT 4 MILES, UNTIL YOU COME TO THE FIRST ROAD ON THE LEFT. TAKE THIS ROAD ABOUT 1/8 MILE TO A TWO-TRACK TO THE LEFT, THE CAMPFIRE AND CARS WILL BE VISIBLE FROM THERE.

Shallow creek hike 8-4-14

Wayne led 29 of us up trail for over 2 miles until we reached the yert where we had our lunch.  Most of us made it to the yert even though it was pretty warm out (75) but quite a bit of humidity due to the wonderful rain showers we have been receiving.  Some clouds move in and cooled us down and when we started back to the vehicles it started thundering off to the NE, but we made it back without getting wet.

We will have a mushroom hike Thursday, I plan on going up around Poage Lake, hopefully the fungi will cooperate with us.  I found a few Aspen Boletes today that were pretty nice, have to get them as quickly as you can after they come up.  Bugs, you know!

Saturday is the Hospitals fund raising event at the Del Norte bus barn, 530PM but better go early to avoid a long line..........get your tickets at the SF Clinic or at the door.

Sunday night is the Full Moon, we will have our outing Sun night to coordinate with the hospital fundraising event.  More details will be sent out with the Thursday hiking information and directions to find the place.
