hybrid hike for geodes

Well we had a nice hike looking for geodes even though we didn't find any.  We covered the south canyon side thoroughly after climbing up through the aspen grove.  The hardest part of the climb was making our way through the stunted aspens; they were thicker than hair on a dogs back...........

We hiked about 4 miles round-trip, we went up behind the waterfall for about 1/2 mile before turning around and coming back to the buggies.

The buggy ride in was interesting, I had a flat tire that delayed us a little bit.  On the way out Blaire and I hit a deep waterhole and drowned out my buggy.  David pulled us about 3 miles before it dried out enough to run on its own power........an interesting day.

Even though we didn't find any geodes, it didn't dampen our spirits so much that we couldn't all enjoy ice cream at Cottonwood Cove........

Moonlight Hike

A big thank you to the Munro’s and Mould’s for hosting the event and getting things all setup.  We had a great gathering which was well attended by many grandchildren!

We had a good crowd for the moonlight outing. Moulds and Munros did an excellent job of putting it all together. We did see the moon, but had some clouds.

Moonlight hike this Friday

 

 

Bob & Bonnie Munro are hosting the outing this Friday; they will be bringing the hot dogs, buns, condiments, tortillas, paper products, utensils and drinks.  Will somebody bring the fixins for the s'mores?  And the rest of you, would you bring a dish to go along with the dogs, etc.? And a little chili for the dogs would be nice......

 

Meet on Shaw Mesa at 630PM, Wayne & Linda will have the campfire going so come on up and have a good time.  If it is raining, come on up because this mesa doesn't get the rain like it does down in South Fork.

 

The moon is 99% full Friday night, probably will come up around 815PM [Ed. 7:49PM].............

Trout Creek Hike

Wayne led a group of 28 hikers up the Trout Cr. trail, then down, then up, then down and finally up to a nice lunch spot; this is the largest group of the season so far.  The wildflowers are almost finished at this lower elevation.  A lightning struck tree was almost consumed by flames along the trail, it is a wonder it didn't start a wildfire.

 

This was a good hike with lots of fellowship, exercise and deep breathing opportunities. Everybody made it all the way in and back out so that must mean it was a successful hike....

 

Doug will be offering a hike tomorrow at 9AM.  I will be gone Thursday, so there won't be a hike unless somebody wants to lead it..........I will send out another email re. the moonlight outing this Friday night.

Tuesday ATV Ride

There will be an ATV ride on Tuesday, July 8. The plan is to go to Kite Lake, and to leave at 8  AM.

Colorful Del Norte Peak

Lots of people missed one of the most beautiful days ever to the top of Del Norte Peak.  The welcoming committee of 40+ elk took several looks and cleared the top of the hill for the four of us.  The flowers are in full bloom--many more than I could send you.  The display will be there for several more weeks, but the alpine sunflowers will wither soon.

If you go on your own, take along a flower book.  The floral variety is terrific and the vistas are awe-inspiring. 

Next Tuesday my granddaughters arrive in Denver for a short stay in South Fork. Wayne Moulds will probably lead the hike, perhaps nearby to Hogback Mesa.  That's a lovely, gently sloped formation, just south of Del Norte Peak.  It's a different and interesting experience. 

Would it help if we changed the name of these Tuesday hikes to "intermediate?"  or "slightly higher"?  It seems that "easy hike" attracts big numbers (at least 20 last Monday).  If the words scare you--or the phony gossip that I hike too fast--try us.  We try to adapt to our participants, even while offering a little more challenge. But we aren't trying to stress you out--just stretch a bit to make you fit and healthy.
